Why this film matters
Garden of Kin turns a familiar Chinese drinking game, in which players take turns naming things in a ‘garden’ until someone falters, into a structure for family conflict. Each round, from botanical garden to zoo to family, lets buried resentments surface in a single candlelit room. The makers say they wanted Taiwanese Mandarin, Northeastern speech and Hong Kong-accented Putonghua to collide, so voice performance and dialect carry much of the comedy.
The Chroma Awards gallery lists it as the first-place winner in Film - Comedy & Mockumentary in Season 1.
