Why this film matters

Souls of the Shipwreck tells grief and recovery as a fable: a woman sings colour back into the souls of a wreck, and they mend the ship. Its makers say they chose metaphor and mood over realism because consistency and fine gesture were hard to control, which makes the film a clear example of a style chosen around the tools’ limits.

It was the overall winner of ITU’s AI for Good Film Festival 2025, announced in Geneva on July 9, 2025.

Remote production and schedule

In ITU's interview, the makers say the film began as an experiment in making a film together remotely, with Dana in Vancouver and the others in Korea, and that they built it in 48 hours.

Technique

The makers told ITU that keeping scenes visually consistent and getting natural movements and small gestures right was difficult, so they leaned into metaphor and mood instead of technical realism.
