Why this film matters
The Last Span is a roughly 17-minute folk fantasy. A broken bridge has divided the two banks of the Fuchun River for years. A six-year-old girl needs to cross to find her mother, and a bridge-builder carrying an old tragedy takes up his tools again, waking an ancient creature beneath the water. Chinese reports say the idea draws on the history of the painting Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, which was split in two after a fire and later reunited for exhibition. The story turns that division and reunion into a bridge that has to be closed.
It won Best Story in the Astana AI Film Festival’s 2026 Open Competition. The executive director told China News Service that the team spent most of its time on the script and visual style, not on generation. That is the maker’s account of the process.
