Why this film matters
The Moriscos, Muslims forced to convert in Spain, were stripped of their language, dress and music before their expulsion, which leaves few images of them. Abdalla’s film follows one woman, a travelling musician searching for her brother after the Alpujarras revolt, rather than restaging the history at scale. His statement treats memory as inherited and fragmentary, so the film’s problem is to sustain a single wandering figure through landscape and sound in a non-linear form, in Arabic.
It won the Short Film category at the 2026 Austin AI Film Festival. The public copy sits on Escape under the Rome AI Festival’s account, which suggests further festival circulation not otherwise documented here.
