Why this film matters

The premise is one of obsolescence told from the inside. A factory robot loses its place to a newer model, so the familiar fear of being replaced by machines is turned around and given to a machine. A short with a single, clear situation like this depends on whether a manufactured face can carry feeling, which is the problem the organiser’s thumbnail, a worn robot in close-up, puts forward.

At the World AI Film Festival in Cannes on April 22, 2026, La Sélection Mécanique won Best AI Animation Film, according to the organiser’s prize list and its own upload of the film.
