About this edition

Brief
A science-fiction trailer of up to three minutes, with a treatment of up to 12 pages, depicting a hopeful, abundant, technology-enabled future.
Eligibility
Open worldwide except sanctioned territories; AI-generated, hybrid and conventional work all allowed. Finalists use Google tools in development as the production calls for (a rule, not evidence of how any film was made).
Prizes
Grand prize: $2,500,000 towards production of the winner's film plus $100,000 in cash; $100,000 to each of four runners-up.
Jury
Neil deGrasse Tyson, Neal Stephenson, Mira Lane, John Zissimos and Rod Roddenberry.

Why it matters

Future Vision funds development rather than handing out a trophy: the grand prize is $2.5 million towards producing the winning feature. A three-minute trailer and a treatment become a route into financed production. The competition is open to any tools, but its winner and many of its selections were made by AI filmmakers, which is why it is listed here.

The 2026 edition

XPRIZE reports more than 2,500 entries, narrowed to 65 official selections and five finalists. The five finalists’ trailers were screened at Moonshots LIVE in Los Angeles on September 25, where the winner was announced. THE GIFTED by Jeff Synthesized won the grand prize and the SPECS Audience Choice award. Verena Puhm’s NOBODY DIES ON MARS was among the four runners-up, each awarded $100,000.

The winning works are trailers and treatments for films in development, so they are recorded here by title rather than as catalogue films. The competition site and the XPRIZE announcement disagree on the SandboxAQ top-ten award ($10,000 against $20,000), and the two sources label the places differently; this record follows the XPRIZE announcement. A second edition has not been announced.
