Why this film matters

JAILBIRD has to make an animal’s perspective carry a social argument: a chicken taken into a human prison, and what such a project can give both the bird and the people who look after it. The challenge is keeping a non-speaking point of view readable while the human context stays clear around it.

Andrew Salter describes the film as a translation of his own illustrated storyboards into generated shots, which makes it a useful case of drawn pre-production steering an AI workflow. Runway’s 2025 AI Festival awarded it Gold, ranked below the Grand Prix.

Process

Salter's upload says the film began as illustrated storyboards he drew; he then described those drawings to AI and refined the generated videos into the shots he edited together. He states that, apart from drawings shown at the end, all visuals were AI-generated.
