Why follow this artist

Garbus brings documentary questions to generated images: whose memory is being represented, who shapes the reconstruction, and what relationship does an image have to a real person?

Love, Rendered is a hybrid documentary. Its recreated past is guided by its subjects and built from their photographs and present-day mannerisms. It is worth following because the technology serves a specific human relationship. The reconstruction should be understood as interpretation, rather than recovered historical footage.

Garbus produced the film with Dan Cogan and Darren Aronofsky. The project’s collaboration with Google DeepMind and Primordial Soup also makes it a different production model from the independent, small-team genre films in the collection.
